I decided to start this blog to share my passion and fascination with the world of surgery. Some of you have been through it. That is a perspective I cannot share. Of course I am thankful for that. One thing that my job reveals to me on an almost daily basis, is how much gratitude I feel for my general well being. When you start feeling sorry for yourself because you've worked all day and your legs ache, or you're upset because the coffee cart closed early, and you scrub in to assist in the removal of a cancerous mass, or amputate a diabetic non-healing limb, or help to repair a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, you will see what you take for granted. This is something I try to remember every day.

There are sad things and things that are elating about the operating room. Humor, I believe, plays a very important role in the OR, ER, and most other high stress area's of health care as in life. Humor seeks to find a balance. Humor may not appear appropriate to everyone in every situation. It is a stress reliever, sometimes nothing more than an attempt to break the tension of a very intense procedure. A reminder to breathe. If any of my future posts offend, I apologize now, it is not intentional.
